"Scientometric analysis of economic disciplines: identification of trends in the development of science in Kazakhstan in a global context"

About The Research

Scientific development is a key driver of a country's economic growth. Economic progress and the ability to sustain social and economic advancement are vital for national well-being. In Kazakhstan, where the economy has long depended on the resource sector, strengthening the real economy has become a top priority for the coming years. State programs such as the Strategic Development Plan of the Republic of Kazakhstan until 2025 and national projects like Sustainable Economic Growth for the Well-being of Citizens and Technological Breakthrough through Digitalization, Science, and Innovation are directly aimed at improving the economic situation and fostering a knowledge-based economy built on scientific achievements.

Achieved Outcome 4:

An analysis of Scopus publications in EEF, BMA, and DS fields in Kazakhstan (1991–2022) identified 4,676 articles—2,194 in EEF, 2,052 in BMA, and 430 in DS. Key research trends and keywords were determined through structured analysis.

Based on Bradford’s Law, journals publishing both Kazakhstani and global articles were analyzed using Scopus data. The journals were classified under Economics, Econometrics, and Finance; Business, Management, and Accounting; and Decision Sciences. The study identified and examined leading journals and determined the distribution of publications according to Bradford’s Law.

A detailed citation analysis was carried out using Scopus and Dimensions databases through Python and VOSviewer. Using authorized access via Scopus Developer and Google Colab, articles affiliated with Kazakhstan were extracted and analyzed.

Collaborations between countries and authors in economic disciplines were analyzed using Python. The study focused on Economics, Econometrics, and Finance (EEF), Business, Management, and Accounting (BMA), and Decision Sciences (DS), with emphasis on research affiliated with Kazakhstan. It was found that Kazakhstan collaborates most actively with Russia, the USA, Ukraine, the UK, Turkey, China, and Poland. Co-authorship patterns and key research keywords were also identified.

Achieved Outcome 5:

The analysis identified publication trends, citation levels, and institutional structure. Research in EEF and BMAfocused on sustainability, innovation, and digitalization, while Decision Sciences covered supply chains and analytics. Kazakhstani studies mainly applied descriptive methods, unlike global works emphasizing experimental ones. Collaboration involved over 80 countries, with Russia, the USA, the UK, Turkey, and China as main partners.

Achieved Outcome 6:

During the reporting period, measures were taken to strengthen research quality, publication ethics, and methodological competence. Emphasis was placed on promoting publications in high-impact journals, developing open science infrastructure, and enhancing researcher training in academic writing and data analysis. Proposals included creating a national repository of open data, improving funding transparency, and fostering international collaborations through joint projects and postdoctoral programs. Efforts were also directed toward developing national journals and ensuring compliance with global research integrity standards.
